Each Contestant will compete in three equal phases of preliminary competition: Evening Gown, Fitness and Interview. The numerical scores or mentions from the preliminary phases of competition are added up, and the contestants with the highest composite score or mentions become semifinalists. The number of semifinalists will be determined by the total number of contestants in the competition. The semi-finalists will be presented in Evening Gown, Fitness and answer their On-Stage Question and ranked for court placement through final balloting which will result in the crowning of the national winners.
MINIMUM SCORE POLICY:
If a delegate is the ONLY person in her division for one of our 3 national titles of Miss American Teenager®; Miss American Junior Teenager® or Miss American Preteenager® she must earn a MINIMUM PRELIMINARY SCORE OF AT LEAST 80 POINTS out of the maximum 100 eligible points. If she doesn't earn the required minimum score from the judges the Miss American Teenager Pageant will not crown a winner for said division and the national prize package will not be awarded.

The Evening Gown Category showcases each contestant’s grace, poise, and sense of style. This phase of competition allows contestants to express their personality and elegance through their presentation and gown choice.
Judges will consider the following criteria:
The Evening Gown segment is not a contest of the most elaborate attire but a reflection of how confidently and beautifully each young woman carries herself. Contestants should embody timeless elegance, inner confidence, and the poise of a true Miss American Teenager.

The Fitness Category is designed to evaluate each contestant’s confidence, energy, stage presence, and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. This phase of competition celebrates strength, vitality, and self-assurance rather than physical perfection.
Judges will consider the following criteria:
Contestants should present themselves in a manner that reflects health, confidence, and a positive self-image. This is not a competition of body type, but of how well each young woman embodies balance, wellness, and inner strength.

The Interview Category is designed to give each contestant the opportunity to share her personality, opinions, and communication skills with the judges. This phase highlights authenticity, and the ability to express oneself with confidence and sincerity.
Judges will consider the following criteria:
The Interview segment is not a test of perfection, but an opportunity for each contestant to show who she is beyond the stage—her character, confidence, and inner strength. Contestants should approach the interview as a genuine conversation that reflects their goals, values, and individuality as a future Miss American Teenager.
Once the semi-finalists are announced during the final show, they will again compete and the competition will narrow the field to a group of finalists. The judges will then make their final ranking based on their overall impression of each finalist. The judges will select a winner and runner-ups for each of the courts.
The results of this competition is not used to determine the overall winners of Miss American Teenager; however, each contestant is REQUIRED to wear a costume symbolic of the area they represent. Get creative by researching your state flower, tree, or bug. Perhaps someone historical or famous is from your state that you want to represent. Remember, think big...think memorable! Awards will be given for Most Original, Creative and Whimsical.
